Calculate the number of tiles

Question
How many tiles are needed to fill an area 40 square ft with 12" X 12" tiles?
Answer
STEP 1:    Here, 12" X 12" indicates 12 in. X 12 in. Recall the fact that 12 inches equals 1 foot. So we can rewrite the dimensions of each tile, 12" X 12", as 1 ft X 1 ft. Now we can see that the area of a tile is 1 ft2

STEP 2:    We are given that the total area to be filled is 40 square ft. To find the number of tiles needed to fill the area, just divide the total area by the area of a tile.
answer is 40
We need 40 tiles with 12" X 12" dimensions to fill an area of 40 square ft.
